Day 4 - "Ladies and Gentlemen, The Rolling Stones!"
Mick Jagger at the age of 71 probably runs at least a 5K every night he preforms. In fact he does run to get in shape for tours. In this picture he is 22 years old. This is a copy of he concert program from the night my brother Phil and I saw the Stones in Boston Garden on November 5, 1965. Bill Wyman is retired from the Stones. Brian Jones and the Boston Garden have both been relegated to the ages. As the joke goes, we all need to consider what kind of a world we are going to leave to Keith Richards. Tonight Mick and the lads got me through my six miles at my current expected marathon pace. Tonight it was hot and humid. I worked a full day and loved every second of it but when I got home I was tired. I took a power nap when the woman I'm related to by marriage came home and woke me up. I spent the next few minutes negotiating with myself on whether I was going to run or not. But alas, you can never win an argument with yourself. I needed something and the answer was the boys from London. I started off with the "Sticky Fingers Live" album and then moved into the Hyde Park concert from two years ago as I ran the hike and bike trail in Stow near the high school. There seems to something magical about my IPod. In the words of former tv host Jack Paar who is probably interviewing Brian Jones tonight in that great tv studio in the sky, "I kid you not," when I say as I moved from the trail to the streets the song that came on was.....wait for it..."Street Fighting Man." How great is that? The easy rhythm of the first three and a half miles became a stronger cadence. The 13:45 minutes per mile moved into the twelve minute range. I know its slow. I know its unimpressive as far as speed but hot damn, it's gradual improvement. As the sweat and the heat started to take over in the sixth mile "Give Me Shelter" now flowed through my headphones. As I came into the house I knew I was late for dinner but I also knew the Boss who is avid runner wouldn't mind. In fact I knew exactly what she would do. She smiled. Dinner was on the grille but it could wait until after my shower. As the cold shower brought my body temperature back to the land of the living there was a giant feeling of accomplishment that left any weariness out on the roads. I felt invincible. I felt like I would live forever. Keith Richards would be proud. We have a duet concert scheduled for the Akron Civic Theater in 2040. Hope you can be there. On the other hand. This also may be the "runner's high" you hear that runners experience. Doesn't matter. It's only rock and roll...and running....and I like it!
